2018 ABP Year 10 Maths Competition Success
Four pupils from year 10 competed against 18 other teams from the local Hampshire region at The Port of Southampton on Tuesday the 6th of February. The competition staged by Associated British Ports (ABP) and Applemore college included rounds on Sequences, Number pyramids and Simultaneous equations. The competition was designed to allow students to apply broader aspects of mathematical thought processes rather than simply to do the same sort of questions they will see in their GCSE exams.
The team emerged as winners, with Applemore College in second place. A cheque for £500 will be presented to the school’s maths department and the team will be treated to an exclusive trip on a Harbour Master’s launch to show them the port from the water. Congratulations to Kira, Subhaan, Gareth and Richard.
The £500 winnings from the competition helped to fund a trip to Bletchley Park to visit the home of the birth place of modern day computing and the famous work of Alan Turing on deciphering the Enigma Code.
40 Year 9 and 10 pupils had tours of the grounds at Bletchley and were introduced to the Bombe. The machine used to decipher the enigma code. Pupils even had the chance to use an actual Enigma Machine.
University of Southampton Mathematics Challenge 2018
By Gareth Hopkins
Here at The Romsey School, we have always prided ourselves in our mathematical prowess, and this was exhibited especially well by 4 students from our school during the above-mentioned event. The students Xavier Dunn, Nina Bird, Fleur Newman and Gareth Hopkins achieved highly in challenges which not only required complex mathematical thinking, but creativity and resilience, as some challenges required lots of number-crunching, and others used concepts studied at A-level!
At 7:00 PM on the 30th of May, the award ceremony started, with the pro-vice-chancellor of the University handing out the awards. In the challenge for years 8 and under, Fleur received a well-earned certificate of distinction and Nina won an incredible third prize! Gareth received a certificate of merit in the senior challenge.
After the ceremony, the students listened to a thought-provoking talk by professor Marika Taylor (who earned her PHD under Stephen hawking) about black holes, Dyson (not the vacuum guy) spheres and quantum computers. However, we mustn’t forget to pay tribute to the Maths department, for their enthusiastic and inspirational support, We couldn’t have done it without you!

Congratulations to Richard on placing 36th in the 2017 UKMT maths challenge Olympiad for year 9. To qualify Richard, along with 60 of his year were entered into the UKMT intermediate challenge aimed at encouraging mathematical thinking. Four pupils progressed form this phase. Gareth, Subhaan and Lottie got to the Grey Kangaroo with Richard Qualifying for the Olympiad (approximately the top 1000 in the year group). Richard completed all 6 questions of the challenge (3 is what would be expected) and scored an outstanding 51 out of 60. Placing him joint 36th in the country.
