Begin Film Scoring Assignment #1
Using any melody, harmony, one note, multiple notes, rhythm, or any combination, create the following moods:
Fearful Determined Surprised
Criteria
Find a Picture for each of the moods above and import them into Mixcraft.
Create your music: play one or more sounds of a musical instrument(s) and/or loops to create each mood (aim for about 10 seconds for each mood).
Reshape the note’s volume and pan to create a musical experience (rather than just a simple “on/off” note.)
Record with a metronome, pick a tempo you like to match each mood. The professionals do too.
Change tempo and key signatures if you want. (Add marker, then select the change)
Keep all 3 moods in the same project (not track) with about 3 seconds of silence in-between.
Export as an MP4 and upload to Google Classroom
Presentation - A discussion on how music is used in film and movies. A film score uses music to follow and enhance the action on screen. It specifically follows the film.
11 ways to use music in Film (Slides)
Your Project is to create the foley and sound effects for the "Superman and the Mechanical Monsters" clip. Each student will create their own version of this video. This is partially a group project; we will Foley as many sounds as we can in groups of 4, then you will edit and find the remaining effects using other sources (soundbible, freesound.org, or others). The video should have a complete soundscape with well layered sounds and smooth transitions. The links below will help you complete the project
Superman Video - This is the video we will use for the project
Superman Sounds Needed - While watching the video, you will complete this form and include all sounds needed for the video.
Superman Theme - Superman Theme Soundtrack to use as background music
Superman Foley Rubric - Project Rubric with grading guidelines
City Sounds - A city ambience and walla you can use for the project
City Sounds 2 - A city ambience and walla you can use for the project
Step 1 - Sounds
Go through the video and make a list of animals and actions for which you will need to find sound effects.
Step 2 – Finding Sound Effects
Soundbible.com – Download Mp3 files and import them into Mixcraft
Freesound.org - Username: rhsaudioeng Password: bulldogs
PartnersInRhyme.com - Royalty Free Sound Effects
MovieSoundClips.net - Sound clips and audio from thousands of movies
Create your own with voice or record in sounds.
Step 3 – “Telling the Story”
Use the sound effects you found to enhance the video.
Layer effects together to create a more realistic soundscape. Each sound is like a paint brush stroke adding to the overall picture. Example: Layering multiple horse running sounds together at different times is more realistic than one sound of a horse running.
Effects can be as long or short as you want them to be.
Be sure to line up sound effects exactly with the action they represent.
Some effects may need to use fade in and out to keep effects from “shocking your listener.
Match levels - nothing is too loud or soft.
Step Five – Music
Add music that will enhance your video. Make your own or use loops from Mixcraft. The music is to enhance the video and sound, not overpower it. If also helps to smooth out the sound effects.
1. The 5 types of sound effects.
2. How to use sound effects.

Tips For Creating Hip Hop/Rap Drums
The Alpha Sampler:
The Alpha Sampler allows you to take any sound and play it like a piano on any pitch. It is particularly useful for writing in a melody using sounds that you find or record in that don't have multiple pitches to them. The video explains how to add sounds to the Alpha Sampler. This also works well for 808 Bass Samples and writing bass lines.
Today you will learn how to record into Mixcraft with a microphone. I will detail the process in class, but the video included here can help you at a later date as can the written instructions below. You will be creating and recording a Madlib for today's assignment.

2. Jimmy Fallon madlib example!
3. DON'T OPEN THIS YET!!! Madlib! DON'T OPEN THIS YET!!!
4. Mixcraft Madlib: Record and Edit Audio. Add Compression, EQ, and additional effects as needed. When finished upload to Google Classroom as a .MP3 File.
Augmentation - playing the melody twice as slow, then playing it twice as slow again.
Diminution - playing the melody twice as fast, then playing it twice as fast again.
Note Subtraction - Taking one note away at a time from the short melody
Note Addition - adding one note at a time to make the short melody

Due Wednesday at the end of the hour
Please watch the video covering Automation and how it is used.

Effects and MIDI Controllers
Advanced MIDI Functions
Take time to add automation to your 60-Second Drum Beats as practice.
Today we will start our Two 60-Second Drum Beats Assignment. Using the skills we have been working on with drums in Mixcraft, create two different 60 second drum beats with two different tempos. You will create them in the same project, but use different kits, instruments, and tempos. No loops please, only one shot samples. You can use the step sequencer, midi keyboards, launchpads, Omni-Sampler or any other tool to create your music. Be sure to Quantize as you work!!!
When finished, Mix down to a .MP3 file and upload to the Google Classroom assignment. You have two days to work on your beats and we will listen on Wednesday. Save the project file, we may use these beats later for another assignment.
Please listen to and follow along with the Omni Sampler Tutorial Here
Build your own custom drum kits with the Omni Sampler Virtual Instrument. Drag and Drop Samples and One Shots.
Changing settings on the Sampler
Don't Forget To Quantize!
First, Grab a MIDI Keyboard out of the cabinet and plug it in. Please hit the Octave DOWN button one time to correctly sync up the keyboard with the notes you need.
DO NOT OPEN MIXCRAFT YET. It uses the whole sound card and won't let you listen to a youtube video.
Please Watch this video to start the assignment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnC0foBvJYc
The video screencast goes over how to complete your Rhythmic Dictation Assignment. Please refer to the video first if you have questions.
Drum Set Rhythmic Dictation -
Open Mixcraft, Create a Virtual Instrument Track and load in Standard Kit 1.
Change your tempo to 100 BPM!!!! Turn On the Metronome. The following rhythms are recorded at that tempo and you must record in tempo in order to quantize correctly.
Next, listen to Rhythm 1. After listening, you will practice and figure out how to play the rhythm on your own.
Arm the track and record the rhythm with the metronome. You can record each part separately in lanes (Kick, then Snare, then Hat), or all together.
After recording, be sure to quantize and fix any errors, then move to the next rhythm.
When finished, line all the rhythms up in sequence so they play 1 at a time with 1 measure in between.
This should be turned in on Classroom.
Don't open Mixcraft yet. It can cause problems allowing you to watch the video. It uses the whole sound card and won't share with youtube or other programs.
Watch this video -------> Creating Drums in Mixcraft
Now you can open Mixcraft
Creating Mixcraft Drums - Virtual Instrument tracks allow us to play or write music with software MIDI instruments. We will be utilizing the drum kits in Mixcraft on Virtual Instrument tracks to create beats. The screencast goes over how to get started creating drums in mixcraft
Drum Input Options:
