The Regional Safe Schools Program (RSSP), commonly referred to as the Safe School, is an alternative educational initiative designed for students in grades 6 through 12 within the Monroe & Randolph County public school system. Operating under the jurisdiction of the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), the RSSP adheres strictly to all applicable state and federal statutory guidelines.
Students in grades 6 through 12 may be considered for placement due to a broader range of disciplinary actions, including suspension, eligibility for suspension, or potential expulsion.
Established under Public Act 89-383 in 1997, this statewide initiative provides a system of alternative education tailored to meet the needs of disruptive students. The RSSP uniquely pairs a standard public school academic curriculum with a comprehensive behavior management program, utilizing specialized practices not typically found in traditional educational settings.
Admission to the RSSP is evaluated on a strict case-by-case basis.
Students with 504 Plans or IEPs: Students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or Section 504 Plans are not supported at this program.
Enrollment Duration: Student placement is evaluated on a semester-by-semester basis. While the standard duration of enrollment is one semester, extended placements of two to four semesters may be approved if circumstances warrant.
Upon acceptance, students undergo baseline diagnostic testing using AutoSkills, a computer-based assessment and instructional tool integrated into our mathematics and reading curricula. This program identifies specific skill deficiencies upon entry and measures academic growth via post-testing at the conclusion of the term.

Every effort is made to align each student’s academic schedule with the requirements and graduation tracks of their home school district.
To ensure continuity of education, students are placed in equivalent coursework to that of their home school whenever possible.
For students transferring mid-semester, the RSSP prioritizes the seamless continuation of their active course curricula.
