Explain ONE Christian belief about the afterlife. 6 marks
Possible Answer:
One Christian belief about the afterlife is the belief in Hell, a place of eternal punishment for those who have rejected God. This belief is based on teachings from the Bible, such as Matthew 13:50 where it states that people who have sinned will be 'thrown into a blazing fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth'. This quote indicates that Hell is a physical place sinners will go to be punished for the things that they have done. Some Christians, however, debate whether Hell is a physical place or an absence of God. This can be seen in 2 Thessalonians 1:9 where it states that "They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might." This still shows Hell as a place of punishment but relies on Hell being a non-physical place. Overall, then, majority Christians believe that Hell is a place in the afterlife and so act well to try an avoid it.
