How to Teach Your kids to be Responsible for their Things
Many students experience jitters about coming back to school. If they are returning, they might be anxious about who is in their class, their new schedule and what their new teacher will be expecting.
If they are just starting or are new to West Hill, they might have some apprehension about a new environment.
It is also hard for younger students to transition to being away from parents.
For more information on how to prepare your kids for the transition to a new school year, click on the articles provided.
For students starting kindergarten, reading to your children about starting school can be helpful.

Social Emotional Learning Corner
We strive to promote a positive school climate to help students feel connected to their school community and to promote positive interactions. We use a school wide PBIS program which stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support. We teach expectations for behavior and we reinforce positive behaviors through school wide earning of "YES" tickets for being bucket fillers.
We also use a curriculum called Second Step. There are 4 units in Second Step that your children will be learning about throughout the school year. We also promote these skills with school wide activities and incentives for students and classroom lessons.
Skills for Learning
Empathy
Understanding and managing emotions
Problem Solving
The first unit that students will be learning about is skills for learning which includes teaching students to think of learning new things with a growth Mindset, instead of saying, "I can't do it", we teach growth Mindset language of "I can't do it yet". We also teach students to quiet their body and be able to look with their eyes, listen with their ears and use their brain to think about what the teacher is saying which is called whole body listening.
I will be including some information about each unit of Second Step as we move through the school year so you know what your children are doing at school and can reinforce these thems at home if you choose to do so.
Mindful Activities to Reduce Stress and Promote Well Being
What is Mindfulness?
The Definition of Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.
Mindfulness is a quality that every human being already possesses, it’s not something you have to conjure up, you just have to learn how to access it.
