Every child is an artist.
When my students tell me, "I want to be an artist when I grow up," I reply, "Guess what! You already are!" Then I watch as the lightbulb goes on and their face lights up. There's something magical about creating something that wouldn't exist without you that's exciting and empowering.
Once a week students come to my Art room for forty minutes, and I try to make that time as rich as I possibly can. We look at art, we discuss ideas, we experiment, we practice, we get messy, we make mistakes and find ways to creatively fix them, we help each other, and we create things to proudly share with the world.
My favorite part of my job is giving my young artists a little direction and watching as they take off like little rockets in different directions. Their creations are as different as each of them are and they inspire me, as an artist, all the time.
I've had the good fortune of teaching my absolute favorite subject since 2006, and here at Stony Brook School since 2021. My goal is to spread my love and passion for Art to as many children as I possibly can in my lifetime, and in the process, expand their creative minds and build their self-esteem. Thanks for loaning your kids to me for a few years so I can do just that.
A few specifics:
Please have your child bring a smock to school to protect their clothes on Art days. The best smock is an oversized short-sleeved tee shirt.
I save most artwork until the end of the school year so that I have as much of your child's work to choose from as possible for our Art Show. All work will be returned in June.
