The first trimester of school was fun with lots of themes to work with. Halloween brought a "haunted house" obstacle course. Obstacle courses are great for working on coordination, balance, motor control and motor planning. The preschoolers decorated an ugly sweater in December using stickers, tinsel, and ribbons on a vertical surface. Use of vertical surfaces are great for balance, visual attention, and shoulder, arm, wrist, and hand strengthening and positioning. The hallway outside of the PT/OT room is slowly getting a make-over with color and activities. The dot activity helps the students identify colors, works on reaching and balance, and helps with patterns and sequencing.
One of the tools I utilize during PT sessions with the students is a visual schedule. It helps keep the student on task as well as provides him/her with expectations of the session. It can also reduce anxiety and help the student to participate much more.
