Schoology Parent ACCOUNT SETUP

Parents: RCPS is pleased to offer you access to Schoology, Rockingham's learning management system (LMS) for students in grades 6-12. Schoology brings together all your child's coursework into one location to make communication and organization easier for all stakeholders. Your parent access account will allow you to see most course assignments, due dates (including overdue notifications), course updates, student calendars, and you can receive daily or weekly summaries of your child's course activity in Schoology.

(Please note: Official grades and attendance records remain in PowerSchool.)

STEP 1: Sign up for a Parent Account in Schoology

Important Information Before you Get Started:

  • Locate the 12-digit code for each child provided by your child's school.

  • If you have multiple children, use one code to initially register with Schoology, then use Step 2 for any additional children.

  • RCPS teachers, you should set up your parent account using a PERSONAL email address, not your Rockingham email address which is already associated with your Schoology teacher account. You can then link your accounts.

You will need to register for a free account at the Schoology site to add your first Child.

  1. Go to www.schoology.com

  2. Click on REGISTER to create a new parent account.

  3. Click on PARENT.

  4. Enter the 12-digit code provided by your child's school (on the same document that contains your child's PowerSchool and Google information).

  5. Complete the form to add your name, email address, and a password of your choice.

  6. You will receive an email to verify your account. Be sure to read the email and follow any directions it provides.

After registering your email address and your child's code, when you log into to www.schoology.com, you will see your name in the top right corner. Click your name and then choose your child's name from the drop-down menu to see his/her course.

You can watch the signup process with this video link: Creating an account to access the Parent Portal

STEP 2: Add Additional Children (if applicable)

You can watch the signup process with this video link: Sign up for a Parent Account in Schoology

Do you have more than one child in grades 6-12 in RCPS this year? If so, you can associate them to this same account you set up in step 1. This allows you to see all your children in the same Schoology account.

Follow the directions found here to add additional children: Add Additional Children to Your Account

STEP 3: Set Your Desired Communications

You can choose to receive an email summary (daily or weekly) of your child's activity in Schoology. Also, you can select to be notified by email on any of your child's overdue work submissions in Schoology.

STEP 4: View Your Child's Activity

To find your child's activity, select his/her name from the dropdown (shown at left). From there, you can view Schoology much in the same way your child does.

Please visit this page for more details about the kinds of information you can see and where to access it: Schoology Home Page

Special Notes to Consider

  • Grades -- Not all assignments affecting your child's grade may appear in Schoology. Please refer to PowerSchool for your child's official status as PowerSchool is deemed the gradebook of record. (If you do see a grade in Schoology, please know it may not be accurate. We recommend to teachers that the Overall Grade feature simply be turned off in order to prevent confusion. Be aware that, if you receive a parent digest, the top part of the email for Overall Grades should be blank.)

  • Attendance -- Like grades, attendance is housed in PowerSchool. Please find attendance information for your child officially in PowerSchool.

  • Assignments -- Certain work done through an assignment feature in Schoology called "Google Drive Assignments App" will not be visible to you due to Google's privacy settings on student files. Please ask your child directly to see these Google-hosted documents as it is not possible to pass these through for your view in Schoology.

For the 2020-21 school year, all 6-12 teachers are expected to use Schoology in delivering their instruction. For some teachers, this is a new experience so we ask that you please communicate with your child's teacher with any questions about what you see.
