2nd Grade Curriculum

Language Arts/Literacy Program

Teachers in Rockingham County willl continue to learn and implement the LETRS/Literacy program to support our students in reading, spelling, and writing.  Please click on this link to read more about the LETRS program.  Your child will have lessons and activities in these subjects each day.

Math

Math lessons occur daily and will be taught in a whole-group setting. We make most lessons hands-on and interactive by using a variety of math materials and math manipulatives to make concepts visual and concrete. A typical lesson involves a student-led approach in which students explore the concept and explain their reasoning and the strategies used to solve the math problem.   Students will participate in cooperative learning groups and will also complete individual activities to demonstrate their understanding of concepts.  Games, centers, and special projects are also part of math instruction.

Science and Social Studies

We have a lot of fun units in these subject areas! Life cycles, magnets, weather, plants, and animal habitats are a few of the Science units coming up this year. In Social Studies, we will learn about maps, American Indians, and economics along with other topics of study.

Homework

In second grade, we are encouraging the students to read for 15 minutes each night.  During that time, your child may take turns reading with you, read "just right books" independently, and/or you may read aloud with your child.   Your child can also be reading the "starred" decodable stories in his or her journal.

Communication

*Your child will have a green homework folder to carry papers and notes between home and school.  Please check this folder every night. You may also send notes to me in the homework folder.   The color-coded, five-day,  rotatatoin schedule has been placed in the back window of the folder.  Please keep the schedule in the folder, so you may check the schedule daily.

*A classroom newsletter link has been shared in Seesaw.   Please make sure you check the newsletter for updates.  There will be important updates including class information and important dates.

*You may include a note in your child’s homework folder.  You can also call me at school and leave a message for me to contact you (school phone # 289-7510).  You may also contact me through school email: afulk@rockingham.k12.va.us  I will do my best to respond within 24 hours during the school week.
