In March of 2021, Rachel DeKuiper and Sharon Wells had a dream to convert a retired school bus into a mobile library. They wrote a grant to the Rockford Education Foundation (REF) and received $25,000 in funding.
The RPS transportation department, under the leadership of Kyle Forman, helped us transform the outside of the bus and gutted the inside of the bus.
The RPS maintenance department put in new flooring. Tom Larsen, built the shelves and benches and his wife, Laurie, custom-made cushions for comfortable seating.
RHS student, Kristi Weaver, in Mrs. Burkholder's graphic design class designed the artwork on the outside of the bus and brought our theme, "Reading Takes You Places," to life.
The Rockford community donated thousands of high-interest, gently used books to the Rockford Book Bus. The books were sorted and labeled by staff and volunteers.
The Rockford Book Bus has been blessed with the best driver every summer. Jill Kuzma, our Cat in the Hat, is a crowd-favorite and a mobile library champion.
Our book bus staff consists of teachers, media specialists, and volunteers. They are always ready to share a story, play word games, and help kids find just-right books.
Families that visit the Rockford Book Bus will be able to hear a story, play word games, and check out up to three books. No library card is required for this.
We are lucky enough to have volunteers join us for some of our stops. We appreciate the extra hands and how our community supports literacy together.
Read it, Love it, Return it! Books can be returned directly to the Book Bus or to the Book Bus Dropbox at the RPS Administration Building.
