6th Grade Social Studies

Course Description:

Welcome to 6th Grade Social Studies! This year, students will explore Minnesota's rich history while developing the skills historians, geographers, economists, and civic leaders use to better understand the world around them.

Throughout the year, students will investigate how geography, culture, economics, government, and historical events have shaped Minnesota and continue to influence our communities today. We will study the histories and perspectives of the Dakota and Anishinaabe Nations, examine the fur trade, treaties, immigration, the U.S.-Dakota War, Minnesota's role in the Civil War, and the growth of our state's industries and government.

Following the Minnesota Academic Standards in Social Studies, students will learn to think critically by asking historical questions, analyzing primary and secondary sources, evaluating multiple perspectives, and using evidence to support their conclusions. They will also develop an understanding of civic responsibility, economic decision-making, and how people, places, and environments are connected.

Learning in our classroom is active and engaging. Students will participate in discussions, simulations, inquiry-based investigations, collaborative projects, map activities, and analysis of historical documents. Together, we will discover that history is more than learning about the past—it is understanding how the past shapes our present and helps us make informed decisions for the future.
