Definition
Rockingham County Schools defines academically and intellectually gifted (AIG) students as children or youth who perform, or show potential for performing, at remarkable high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, experience, or environment. AIG students exhibit high performance capability in intellectual areas and/or specific academic fields. AIG students require differentiated educational services beyond those ordinarily provided by the regular educational program.
AIG Services
Students in grades fourth and fifth, who are formally identified, receive instruction by the Instructional Coach in their qualifying area(s) of math, reading or both.
Students are pulled twice a week per qualifying area for 40 minutes where students participate in risk taking and challenging individual and group activities for enrichment in their content areas.
Students have opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities such as Battle of the Books, A.S.P.I.R.E Camp (summer), Continental Math League Meets (5x per year)
K-3 students are informally identified by classroom teachers who show early signs of academic giftedness; formal identification of these students will take place in the spring of their 3rd grade year after reviewing CogAt and EOG test scores.
