Terrifying, mysterious, and known to lurk in dark caves and forests the Chilean legend of El Culebron is not an unfamiliar tale. Legend has it that El Culebron is a master shapeshifter that resides in the rural countryside of Chile.
His natural form is that of a monstrous snake with a head shaped like a calf, but he can shapeshift into any form that frightens children the most. One variation of El Culebron is that he hides under children’s beds at night and frightens them before eating them whole.
Legend also states that this creature will attack hikers, mule drivers, and any human that stumbles across its hiding place. People are warned that if they visit Chile’s rural countryside they must avoid places where they are known to inhabit.
El Culebron has been said to arrive at the sites of treasure, in a short time after it has been buried. Legend has it that this creature is attracted to treasures. But legend also has it that it can attract wealth to anyone who can capture it. However, as one can imagine, capturing it is no easy feat.
El Culebrón is basically an Anaconda on super steroids; an enormous, hairy snake with a gigantic, calf-like head. The creature belongs to the rural countryside of Chile, where it is said to come out at night from dark caves or remote forests and eat basically anything in its path. El Culebrón also has a tesoro-radar, and is said to arrive at the sites of buried treasure 40 days after it’s been buried. Anyone wishing to recover the treasure has to douse the ground with aguardiente, in the hopes that the snake will get turnt off the liquor and let its guard down.
In the same way that El Culebrón is attracted to riches, legend also has it that the snake can draw wealth to anyone who is able to “domesticate” it. But trapping a Culebrón is no easy feat: you have to find one in the wild, pluck three of its longest hairs without getting eaten, then put the hairs in a bowl of milk. From that bowl, three baby culebrones will spring to life, and the strongest will eat the other two and become a full-fledged culebrón. From that point forward owners have to maintain the snakes with sacrifices of animals or close relatives (wtf), and leave the blood in a secret location that only the snake knows of. Otherwise, no money for you and you’ll probably get eaten.
A familiar tale to the people of Chile, El Culebron is a monstrous entity with frightening capabilities.
Supposedly dwelling in the rural areas of Chile, the beast is known to attract travelers, and you won’t be surprised to find someone advising you away from the areas these creatures are known to inhabit. Lore tells of travelers, merchants, and hikers being attacked in areas where the serpent-like monster is known to hide.
In its base form, El Culebron takes the form of a gigantic snake with a distinctive head in the form of a calf.
If this abstract and creepy description isn’t enough, the thing that makes El Culebron so deadly is its ability to shapeshift into what children fear most.
Legends also say that El Culebron is attracted to wealth, especially newly buried wealth.
Supposedly, if you can capture one of these beings, it is said that you, too, can attract wealth — but capturing is much harder to do. A ritual involving milk and hair is needed to spawn your own Culebron, a strange combination, but this is old magic.
Elusive, aggressive, and adaptable, El Culebron is one of Chile’s most infamous monsters.
