BASICS for Getting Started in Zoom

  • Muting All - Use this feature when you need to mute your entire group all at once.

  • Recurring Meeting - This is perfect for scheduling class meetings that happen each day.

  • Basic Troubleshooting Tips - Students not coming through clear? Video glitching? Talking with no sound? Audio too loud? This video is for you.

  • Waiting Room - How to admit from the waiting room. Remember you can also click on the 3 dots on a participant during a meeting and put them back in the waiting room.

  • Co-host - This is an important feature when you have another adult in the Zoom with you.

  • Recording a Meeting - A way to record your class sessions or to record lessons to share with the class for asynchronous lessons.

  • Hand Raising & Reactions - You may use this feature to interact with students while they are on mute. They can raise their hand and send a few reaction emojis that will appear in their video window.

  • Turning Off Student Camera/Remove/Waiting Room - Features to be familiar with in order to regulate student video feeds.

  • Gallery to Speaker View - This is not only a key feature for you to know so you can view your class, but is also important to teach your students so they can change the group view as well.

  • Spotlight VS Pin a Video - Use this feature to view students or yourself as the only video being presented to everyone (spotlight) and to view a particular student on just your device (pin).

  • Renaming - Do you have a student who has logged in and their name is not there or is incorrect? There is an easy way to fix this.

INTERMEDIATE Tips in Zoom

  • Breakout Rooms - This is a wonderful way to give students an individual room to be in to work (and you can pop in and visit them), and a place for small group with a specialist to happen while you continue to teach in the main room. Read below for some specifics.

    • Pre-naming a Breakout Room - You can have different subjects or topics for breakout rooms, set these so they are recurring.

  • Spotlight VS Pin a Video - Use this feature to view students or yourself as the only video being presented to everyone (spotlight) and to view a particular student on just your device (pin).

  • Whiteboard Screen Share - Go to 1:40 in the video to jump to Whiteboard use and settings.

  • Annotations - Write over a screen share, use a spotlight (laser pointer), and type text over any screen share including videos.

  • Two Devices Suggestions - Do you wonder why some teachers have more than one computer logged in to their Zoom session? Here is a quick video showing some suggestions for using more than one device.

  • How to Share a Partial Screen - Want to share only a part of your screen so you can do something else with the other part of your screen?

  • Chat with Just the Teacher - There is a setting in "chat" which will allow for participants to only send a chat to you and not to the entire group or to send private chats to others (*Co-Hosts do not see these chats either).

ADVANCED Tips in Zoom

  • Breakout Rooms and Multi-device and Monitoring - This takes some planning but you can have several windows open in order to monitor multiple breakout rooms.

  • Polling - A tool to use to check for understanding or to get feedback from students. You can set this up ahead of time or can do a poll while in the Zoom session.
