Now, let's make sure that we continue to make forward progress and foster a love of reading. Here are some things that you can do at home:
Asking Deeper Questions for Comprehension
Once children read fluently (typically levels N+), we need to push them to think about books in a deeper way. Instead of asking questions about recall (What happened? ) , try asking the following questions:
What do you have in common with the main character in the story? How are you different?
How does the main character feel? How do you know?
Why do you think the character acted that way? What would you have done?
What do you think was the author's purpose in writing this?
What is the problem in this story? What solutions can you come up with for this problem?
What predictions do you have?
What are the main themes of the story? How do these themes relate
to you?
to the world?
to other books that you have read?
Create a culture of reading at home
Read out loud to your child every day
Encourage your child to read for at least 20 minutes a day
Let your child see you reading and enjoying books
Create cozy spots for reading
Go to the library frequently and check out books
Have conversations about the books that you are reading
