Mr. Gordon Fairweather was born in Rothesay, New Brunswick in 1923. He led an incredible life of public service first as an MLA from 1952 to 1962 before moving on to the national political scene and election to the House of Commons. Following his time in Parliament, Fairweather was appointed as Canada's first High Commissioner for Human Rights. He was also the founding chairman of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada. Mr. Fairweather also served on observer missions for elections around the world. An advocate for equality and human rights, Mr. Fairweather was instrumental in ensuring that Section 28, respecting gender equality, was enshrined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Among his many accolades, Mr. Fairweather was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1978 and was awarded the Order of New Brunswick in 2005.
As an alumnus of the Class of 1940, we are honoured to host this event in his name and memory.
