Education Partnerships & Priorities: Understanding school systems, Identifying education partner priorities, and Preparing for conversations to do tobacco free schools work Together
Description: Successful collaboration based on aligned priorities is key to creating and maintaining a tobacco-and nicotine-free environment in schools. This training focuses on understanding the priorities of district and school leaders so grantees can “speak education’s language” in order to advance partnerships and tobacco-free schools policy efforts.
Objectives:
Describe school systems and where school and public health priorities intersect.
Describe your schools’ priorities and the resources you can offer connected to these priorities.
Identify questions you can ask and individuals you can follow-up with to advance shared priorities.

Policy 101: Creating Effective Tobacco-Free Schools Policy
Description: Strong Tobacco-Free Schools (TFS) policies are foundational to effective prevention and intervention efforts and advancing health equity.
This training offers a comprehensive overview of Colorado’s TFS law and the process by which school districts develop their TFS policies.
Participants will learn how to assess school district policies using the updated TFS Policy Checklist and explore best practices for improvement.
You’ll also collaborate with peers to develop actionable next steps for supporting stronger policy implementation in your schools and districts.

Summarize tobacco/nicotine laws that impact youth.
Apply the requirements of Colorado’s Tobacco-Free Schools law and best practices to review district policies.

Description: Effective implementation brings Tobacco-Free Schools (TFS) policy to life. This training builds on Policy 101 by focusing on how to translate policy into practice across school settings. Participants will explore the essential components of TFS policy implementation, including the role of prevention education, restorative discipline, and equitable intervention strategies. The session also covers how to connect students with quit resources and integrate support into existing school structures. Participants will leave with concrete next steps for partnering with school staff to strengthen TFS policy implementation in their districts.

In this training, participants will explore strategies for effectively communicating TFS policy to students, families, school staff, and the broader public. The session includes opportunities to review the TFS Signage Checklist, examine real-world communication methods used in local schools, and consider how positive, strengths-based messaging can promote healthy choices among youth. Participants will also identify approaches for engaging school and community partners and develop actionable next steps to strengthen policy communication and engagement in their school or district.

Start the Conversation: How to Talk with Young People about Vaping and other Nicotine Products
Description:
Trusted adults play a vital role in preventing youth tobacco and nicotine use. The Start the Conversation: How to Talk with Young People about Vaping and Other Nicotine Products workshop supports adults in young people's lives to talk about nicotine use with an open mind and accurate information.
This TOT prepares participants to facilitate the Start the Conversation workshop in their community, expanding the network of trusted adults for the youth they serve.
TOT Objectives:
Develop an understanding of the key concepts and principles presented in the workshop, Start the Conversation: How to Talk with Young People about Vaping and Other Nicotine Products.
Practice a portion of the Start the Conversation workshop.
Describe effective facilitation strategies for adult learners.
Identify next steps for presenting to school staff, community organizations, or parents/guardians.
