Concert Band consists of both 7th and 8th grade students who play a band instrument. Students do not have to audition for this ensemble. Concert Band rehearses during the Roar period of the school day. Students in more than one music ensemble may still be a member of the Concert Band.
Students will learn proper playing techniques, music fundamentals, and concert etiquette through performing challenging repertoire. All students will receive a small group lesson once a six day cycle where wind players will learn good tone production, scales, rhythms, and articulations. Percussionists will learn rudiments, rhythms, and proper playing techniques on a variety of percussion instruments. All students are expected to practice at home to prepare for rehearsals and lessons.
The Concert Band performs for Spirit Night at a high school football game, a December Concert, a Spring Concert, and for assemblies throughout the school year. Students will receive a grade on their report card for band based on their attendance at performances, rehearsals, and lessons as well as playing tests and practice charts.
Symphonic Band is an ensemble for Concert Band members who want to challenge their music abilities. Students must be a member of the Concert Band in order to audition for this ensemble.
This ensemble rehearses on cycle days 1, 2, and 3 during the Roar period beginning in October. The ensemble performs at the December Concert and Spring Concert.
Percussion students will be split based upon an audition between Concert Band and Symphonic Band due to the number of students.
Jazz Band is an auditioned ensemble that performs swing, rock, Latin, funk, and other styles of music. The Jazz Band performs for school assemblies, the Spring Concert, and other performances outside of school. Audition music will be available in October and auditions will be held in November. Rehearsals begin in January.
