Our writing lessons, like reading, will follow a workshop model using Lucy Calkins' Units of Study in Writing.
Here is what you can expect from writing class each day:
- One or two mini-lessons on a strategy, skill, or process. We will usually do this as a large class, on the carpet or close to the teacher.
- Time to write independently. During this time, you will work on writing and rewriting scenes or sections of your piece. You might practice the strategy from that day's lesson, or another strategy that you have been working on.
- The teacher will coach you periodically on how to improve your work and meet your goals.
- We will share and publish our writing in many ways. Opportunities to share with a partner will occur almost daily. We will also make books, publish online, and read our work aloud for an audience.
