In 2018, Addictions Professionals of NC (APNC) was contracted by the NC Division of Mental Health/Developmental Disabilities/Substance Abuse Services to staff a $10M five-year SAMHSA grant, known as the Partnership for Success (PFS) grant. The primary goal of the is to utilize the Strategic Planning Framework (SPF) to prevent underage drinking and e-cigarette and cannabis use. It was through this funding initiative that the Network was born. In August of 2021 the network applied for its first grant opportunity and was awarded funds to support a two-year project: COVID-19 Supplemental Funding for the Substance Abuse Prevention Block Grant in North Carolina.
The Historically Black Colleges & University (HBCU) / Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) Network exists to provide a space for professionals to develop substance prevention strategies aimed to reduce health disparities and achieve health equity for all students.
The HBCU Collaborative Network hosts a monthly meeting which serves an important function in leveraging the collective expertise of all those involved, for the development of initiatives to reduce health disparities on HBCU campuses. By sharing ideas, better understanding perspectives, guiding and contributing to solutions, and co-creating trusted relationships, the objective is that WG participants expand their impact for their respective campus, as well as the collective network of HBCU campuses in North Carolina.
Additionally, Network members receive communications on funding opportunities and initiative that relevant for HBCUs and MSIs
