Our Year

Writing

We focus on the Six Traits of Writing: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions. Students will also cite from different sources to support their writing. Your child will be typing narrative, opinion, and informative essays this year.

Reading

We alternate between fiction novels and nonfiction shorter texts. Your child will be reading with the whole group, in small groups, and also independently.  Please encourage daily independent reading at home!

Spelling

Spelling lists include contractions, homophones, and words with common prefixes and suffixes.

Vocabulary

Students will be introduced to 15 new vocabulary words in each unit. On average, we spend 2 weeks studying and applying the meaning of the new words.

Math

The units covered this year include: place value, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, angles, and measurement. Mastery of basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts is very important. Your child will practice in class daily, but reinforcing the facts at home is invaluable.

Science

We will investigate Earth's resources, energy, motion, electricity, and ecosystems. I teach science to all 4th graders.

Social Studies

Your child will be learning about the economy and the regions of the United States. Mrs. Miller teaches social studies to all 4th graders.

Homework

Your child will be completing monthly/bimonthly book reports. Math homework will also be given to review concepts taught in class. Unfinished classwork may also be assigned. Notification of tests is given at least 3 days in advance. Please check your child's assignment book daily.
