• You are interested in applying for majors in computer science and related disciplines
• You like programming and like solving algorithm problems
• You are interested in UCR Computer Sciences and want to meet UCR students/professors to create support groups to improve coding skills together
Well you're in luck!
UCR Programming Competition (UCRPC) is coming again! This year our theme is Harry Potter! You can find more information on the UCRPC webpage here: https://ucrpc.cs.ucr.edu/F22/
UCRPC has a pre-college division and we encourage our young programming lovers to join! The following prizes/awards are planned (see more details here: https://ucrpc.cs.ucr.edu/F22/awards/index.html)
• First, Second, and Third Place Prizes
• Ada Award for best women participant
• Fastest Solver Awards for each problem
• Honorable Mention for the top 50% of the participants
UCR is currently planning to hold the event in person on Saturday, October 8th, at Winston Chung Hall on campus, but there is also an option to compete online if you wish. You can find out more about the contest on the UCRPC webpage and you can register through this form (https://forms.gle/kwMW25mwmPCrWpow8). This year, UCR designed problems for pre-college students separately to make it more friendly for starters. Participants in the pre-college division are required to participate as individuals. For undergraduate and graduate divisions, teams are allowed. Please send any questions or concerns to ucrpc.organizing@gmail.com. We hope to see you all there!
Data Science Academy
RUSD partners with UC, Riverside and Dr. Paea LePendu to host the annual Data Science Academy for Social Good. This Data Science Academy helps prepare students for life after high school. Early exposure to computer science, data science, and computational thinking allows our students to be better prepared to enter the workforce or pursue computer science in college. This academy focuses on learning data science and applying that knowledge in a way that helps improve our students’ community. Students analyze homelessness data in Riverside County and offer insights on how to end homelessness by the end of the academy. Historically, the Data Science Academy is offered only to juniors and seniors, but this summer, we will open the program to middle school students. Since it's start in 2018, more than 150 RUSD students have participated in Data Science Academy.
Watch the video below for an introduction to Data Science.
Why Data Science for Social Good?
Students will:
Learn statistics
Learn computer science
Learn computational thinking
Synthesize what they've learned and present solutions for ending homelessness in Riverside County.
