ML King Wolves First Invitational Brings State-Leading Marks At Mustand Roundup!
The Wolves put on a show this past weekend, down at the Mustang Roundup hosted by the Trabuco Hills program.
The Wolves' distance squad came out strong, led by Elizabeth Jacklin, who claimed victory in the 3200m and moved up to #8 in California. Freshman Jordyn Ramirez impressed in her 3200m debut, winning the frosh-soph division in her first-ever attempt at the event. Bradley Quezada fought hard to take runner-up in the varsity 3200m, while John Sosa crushed the 10-minute barrier for the first time, showing the Wolves' depth in distance.
The Wolves’ sprinters made their presence known, with Aliyah Rudolph dominating the frosh-soph 400m (1:00.93) and 200m, while Carli Collins followed close behind in third in the 400m (1:03.02). Cayden Tillman matched that energy, sprinting to first in the frosh-soph 100m (11.07) before doubling back for another win in the 200m (22.57).
Freshman Giovanni Cortez added to the Wolves’ success, taking the win in his heat of the 110m hurdles.
The Wolves took control of the 800m, led by Mason Colwell, who blazed through the varsity race in 1:54.88, putting him at #1 in California and #2 all-time in ML King history. Taylor Starling and Olivia Worden grabbed back-to-back heat wins in the varsity 800m, both earning new PRs, while Natalie Drewitz placed fourth overall with a new best of 2:20. In the frosh-soph division, Pacey Schippell and Andrew Moyo went 2-3 in their heat, earning big PRs and showcasing the Wolves’ depth.
The Wolves dominated the relays, with the girls' frosh-soph 4x100 team of Madison Hiraoka, Aliyah Rudolph, Imani Barfield, and Carli Collins taking first place overall. Not to be outdone, the boys' frosh-soph 4x100 squad won their heat and finished second overall, showing that the Wolves' speed runs deep.
The Wolves excelled in the field events as well, with Joaquin Leiva soaring to second place overall in the triple jump (42’5”) and Jemeni McKee earning third in the pole vault.
In the throws, Bailey Mann dominated the frosh-soph division, claiming first in both discus (102’8”) and shot put (29’4”). On the varsity side, Andrew Dixon launched a massive throw of 168’5” in the discus, securing first place for the Wolves.
Capping off the night in dramatic fashion, Maximo Zavaleta made his highly anticipated season debut in the 1600m—and it was nothing short of spectacular. After making it to state as a sophomore last year, all eyes were on Maximo to see what he could do in his return to the track. The Wolves’ star delivered a statement win, surging to a blazing 4:13, which currently ranks #2 in California.
With dominant performances across every event, the ML King Wolves are excited to keep the wheels turning with a dual meet against hometown rival Riverside Poly and a trip down to the infamous Redondo Nike Invitational this weekend.
