1998 Water Polo Team
The Arlington High School Hall of Fame 2024 Team of Distinction is the 1998 Boys Water Polo Team. It was this team, after a couple previous trips by Lion WP teams to the CIF Finals and Semi-Finals, that broke through to win the program’s first CIF Championship, defeating Riverside Poly 9-8. That summer the two teams had met in a tournament in Mission Viejo and the Bears had defeated the Lions 9-0. In the words of Coach Bill Grisham- “It was bad. It was embarrassing but it served as an impetus for us when the season got started.” That “inspiration” and the fact that Grisham’s team always got better as the season went on led Arlington to go 7-1 in league and earning a co-championship with the Bears. They then swept through the CIF Playoffs defeating powerhouse Jurupa Valley High in the semi-finals 7-5 in overtime before winning a thrilling game over Poly in the championship game. The Lions were led that year by All-CIF selections, Damian Dufour; Scott Reed, Vince Urso and Ryan Romain. Coach Grisham was named CIF Division 5 Coach of the Year.
The CIF Banner still hangs in the Main Gym today!
We invite the Arlington Community to be a part of this special event.
