There are signs of art throughout the Riverside Jr.-Sr. high school dating back to the 1980s. From the iconic Viking ship in the foyer of the building to the many student and class murals that adorn the walls, the district has enjoyed a history of great student artists. Junior Gracie Slaven is among one of the best in recent years.
Recently, Slaven was showcased on WVIA as the artist of the week, and has made it on to the Nationals section of Fine Arts with her church. Ms. Lisa Temples, Slaven's art teacher at Riverside, sees the creativity and hard work that Slavin exudes in class. She stated, "Gracie has a very unique illustrative style, which has developed from practice and determination. She inspires her peers with her kindness and creativity."
Currently, Slaven is working on a drawing for the final round of the Fine Arts competition that is in August. For her senior year, she aspires to finish Top 5 for Nationals in Fine Arts.
Slaven's plans on making art a major part of her future after high school. Her goal is to work on cartoons as a storyboard artist. Slaven admitted, "My artistic inspiration comes from wanting to create, whether that be art of my own made up characters and ideas, or drawing different things that I’m really into."
Temples is hopeful that Slaven's work embodies a quote by Albert Einstein, "Creativity is contagious, pass it on," making Riverside an artistically innovative school for years to come.

As the Class of 2023 prepares for their final month high school students, the Class of 2024 turns their collective eyes toward their upcoming senior year. Makayla Decker, the 2022-2023 Miss Viking, will cede her title to junior Cassie Jenkins for 2023-2024.
Decker actually had a hand in helping the new Miss Viking realize her goal. Jenkins stated, "My best friend Makayla (Decker) inspired me to try out for Miss Viking. She was a great leader and role model. Makayla made it such a fun year and I can’t wait to follow in her footsteps."
Jenkins has already begun planning her fall halftime show. "Riverside fans can expect a fun and entertaining halftime show. The cheerleaders will perform to a number of pieces played by the Riverside Marching Units. The theme has not been determined yet, but I can’t wait to choreograph a routine that showcases all the cheerleaders’ talents," stated Jenkins, "I want to create an amazing and memorable year for my teammates and the students at Riverside as Miss Viking."
Jenkins understands the immense pressure and responsibility that comes with the title. On a Friday night in the fall, Miss Viking represents the entire district, but she has also become a role model for many of the young children in attendance. "As Miss Viking, I am excited to represent Riverside and be a role model for all the future cheerleaders," admitted Jenkins.

Riverside soccer: a co-ed “equal opportunity” sport.
At least that is what it has been since the program's beginning. The email students received last week could potentially change that. The email talked of a potential co-op girls soccer team with Old Forge. Would this change prove to be beneficial or could it potentially be a failed opportunity? There are a number of questions that have been brought up:
Will there be the same amount of funding for our team as the boys Riverside, team?
What would our uniforms representing the team look like? Would they be representative to our schools or completely different?
Where would we be playing?
Would we still be able to join the Riverside team that we have now?
From a perspective of someone who loves playing soccer for Riverside and has so many memories involving soccer, not knowing what will happen is quite scary. I did not join the co-ed team last year; however, I planned to sign up for the team for the 2023-2024 season. I know many people on the team and have a respect for their talent. With that being said I know some who may really appreciate this opportunity. I also believe that this could be an excellent opportunity for the girls on the team. It could be a very organized and well managed team that could really shine some light on the female players who may not want to play with the boys.
The questions we have are still crucial to the success of the team. First off, would we still be able to play co-ed with the guys on the Riverside team. I know many girls may like playing with a only girls soccer team. For those of us who may want to play with the team we have always been familiar with, it’d be a relief if we could always go back to that team. Playing with “our team” could also be a unknown variable, if many girls would like to play on this team.
The email may confuse some, as it said Old Forge was forming a girls team calling it a Co-op. So would we be a Old Forge team or would it have nothing to do with our schools. I have been informed that some Old Forge kids are on our track team playing representing our team so would we be like them and play on the Old Forge team representing Old Forge? I also bring the belief that if enough girls are playing on the team from Riverside it should get some funding and transportation for the girls playing. If we play at a field that some may have a very hard time getting to transportation may be a good idea so that we could play to the best of our abilities. These slight things may make a huge change in whether it is a opportunity that should be taken and will be taken advantage of or a failed idea.
I really hope that this becomes a good opportunity as I love soccer and the connections it makes. As the school year ends, we hope that some clarity is provided on what could be a very good opportunity.
