At Riverhead School, Bump@R exists to ensure our school is a fun, fair, and safe place for every learner to grow and succeed. Rather than focusing on rules, Bump@R is built around clear behavioural expectations that help learners understand what positive citizenship looks like within our school community and beyond.

We believe that learners thrive when expectations are explicit, consistent, and regularly discussed. Through hui, assemblies, classroom conversations, and everyday interactions, learners are supported to recognise both appropriate and inappropriate behaviours in different situations. These expectations help learners navigate the diverse cultures, values, and perspectives within our community while understanding what respectful and successful behaviour looks like at school.

A key part of Bump@R is ensuring that expectations are unpacked alongside our learners. We regularly check in with learners to ensure they understand, agree with, and can apply these expectations in different contexts. Conversations consistently link back to the language and wording of our Bump@R Expectations and, within the classroom, our Bump@R Capabilities. This shared language creates consistency across the school and empowers learners to take ownership of their behaviour and choices.

Bump@R also broadens the understanding of safety beyond the physical environment to include emotional, cultural, and social well-being. It helps learners develop clarity around concepts such as bullying, respect, inclusion, and responsibility, while addressing perceptions and misunderstandings about safety.

By “putting the common back into common sense,” Bump@R creates a shared understanding across the school community. Clear expectations are displayed, taught, and reinforced so that all learners know what is expected of them and are equipped to become positive, productive, and respectful members of society.

Ultimately, Bump@R is about preparing children for the next season of their lives, giving them the behaviours, values, and understanding they need to succeed both within and beyond school.
