Overview
In Design, we work on computers to create digital models of our robot and some of its components. We may also design entirely new parts, to be 3D printed. We also create other items digitally, like this website!
The Department:
The design department is responsible for:
Designing 3D elements to be used in gameplay
Monitoring the visual design of the robot
Designing any pamphlets, posters, business cards, or other promotional items
Working with other departments to write and design the engineering portfolio
Developing the website
Maintaining a consistent team visual language
Preparing judge's presentation and associated items
Photograph and document team proceedings
C.A.D.
In many cases, the robot will require a part that we cannot simply purchase, and is too complicated to make with our existing materials. This is where 3D printing comes in handy. The design department will use models, schematics, and measurements of the robot and/or the required part to construct a digital version of this part.
Take for example our claw's mandible. after taking measurements of the objects the claw must be capable of picking up, the CAD team renders a digital prototype. In many cases, to ensure compatibility, a digital version of a real part is often used (as you can see, the claw's mandible is based upon the medium gear). Next, the prototype is 3D printed. Once we have a physical version, the engineers are able to determine what changes would be beneficial to the design leading to the appropriate adjustments being made.

Graphic Design
As you may have noticed, we have developed a very specific design language for our team, and we try to adhere to it in all ways possible. We have developed a sleek, minimalist design that is carried throughout our projects. Another big part of our design are right angles and squares. These are incorporated all over. This contrasts well with our insignia, which is three round gears.
In the 2021-22 season, we made a big decision. In the past, our team colors had been green and purple. That year, we decided to rebrand our team to be red and black. We felt this was necessary for a variety of reasons:
The design language of our team was inconsistent, so developing a consistent style was important.
The specific hues of green and purple we used lacked a sense of unity.
Our school colors are red and black, meaning we lacked a general sense of school connection.
