To maximise opportunities for developing student communication we believe in an approach where communication is embedded within and across our three curriculum pathways and across subject and non-subject-based learning. The communication tools and methods we use also extend beyond the classroom to support students in their understanding of the wider world.
Our intent is for all students to: Understand the world around them. Communicate their needs effectively. Engage in positive social interaction. Develop flexibility of thought and widen their range of interests.
To provide purposeful training for staff and parents that enhances opportunities to develop student communication. All training is deliberately planned around the emerging needs of students. We have excellent relationships with our speech and language team and hold half termly staff training sessions on communication. Our Riverbank staff induction includes a module on "Communication at Riverbank" and we also have a Makaton trainer that delivers weekly training to small groups of staff. In 2022-2023 we aim to offer Makaton training remotely to our parents.
To celebrate success! All students are set personalised and specific targets every year that surround their communication to support progress which is closely mapped against their EHCP outcomes. Progress is celebrated within and at the end of each academic year with students, parents and carers.
