Positioning can be utilized to assist with core strengthening during task performance. It can also be utilized to change the activity demands or improve attention to task. On this site you will be provided with some alternative positioning strategies that can be used at home while your child is completing school work or participating in other activities.
Quadruped
Hands flat on the floor knees directly below hips. This is an excellent position for shoulder strengthening, weight bearing and weight shifting. Children can complete multiple activities such as puzzles, mazes, or craft projects in this position.
Good position for proximal stability and attention to task. Position can be completed in front of a wall and paper/pencil tasks can be completed with paper taped to the wall in front of them (a larger piece of paper may be placed on the wall so that marks are not placed on your wall). Position can also be completed with child participating in bilateral task such as stringing beads/buttons or while completing a fine motor task such as placing objects into a container.
Good position for shoulder stability and attention to task. Your child can complete a variety of activities in this position such as fine motor and or visual motor tasks.
This position addresses shoulder/elbow stability as well as strengthening. Tasks that can be completed in this position are writing, tracing, drawing, coloring or painting.
Great position to address upper extremity strengthening. Child can lay under desk or table and have a paper taped to the bottom of the desk/table to complete drawing, tracing, printing, coloring or painting task.
