Create a self-contained system using Max / MSP that creates a sonic event of a predetermined duration in real time. This event may utilize purely synthesized sound or manipulate (pre-recorded or live-sampled) digital audio in some way.
The specifics of how this plays out is up to you, but you should have a reason for any changes in sound that take place over the course of the event; these choices should add meaning to the work, not distract from it.
You should also consider the ideal duration for a listener’s experience of the piece, and the system should be built such that it concludes on its own at this time. If the ideal duration is only eight seconds, there should be a logic behind the brevity of the event. Likewise, if it is an hour, make each moment count.
(Please note that we have a limited amount of time for everyone to present and discuss their work, so please consult me prior to planning a durational work. It may be necessary to adjust expectations based on the time available.)
