WEEK 1
Stop motion is an animation technique that creates the illusion of movement through a sequence of individually captured frames. The process involves carefully moving physical objects between photographs, which, when played back at a specific speed, appear to move seamlessly.
In this exercise, we will explore the fundamental principles of motion by creating our own animated sequence using a series of still images, applying the core concepts of stop motion to develop a deeper understanding of how movement is created in animation.
-> BASIC REQUIREMENTS
✱ 12 images
✱ 1000 x 1000px
✱ exported as a .gif file
-> ADDITONAL
(none of these are mandatory, these are just ideas/suggestions IF you want to keep working on this project)

The Bouncing DVD Logo was a screensaver created by the DVD company to reduce CRT damage. After its appearance a cold open in the show The Office, it has become a popular loop worldwide.
In this exercise, we will replicate effect using AE. Using a shape, text or a combination of both, we will creation position, rotation, scale keyframes, to make our selected shape hit the frame, and the color to change as it hits the frame. This is to understand one of the key functions of After Effects– Keyframing.
-> BASIC REQUIREMENTS
✱ Must loop!
✱ 1920 x 1080px
✱ exported as a .gif file
✱ color changing as it hits the frame

You will be given an AEP composition with some shapes, created by students from Intro to Graphic Design, taught by Barbara Cutlak.
Download your compositions from here: LINK
For this exercise, think about how you want to animate these shapes in relation to each other, and what makes the most sense with the composition, try ot give the composition a kind of a backstory that will help you guide the animation. Use easing in, try out different types of keyframes, use the graph editor!
-> BASIC REQUIREMENTS
✱ Must loop!
✱ 1000 x 1000 PX
✱ exported as a .gif file

You need to create 4 shapes in one composition, and animate them. Make 4 such compositions, and put them in one big composition!
The point of the exercise is to make some really fun motion pieces, please focus more on the motion and less on the design of things! some inspiration from: Spotify Wrapped '22 by Vucko!
-> BASIC REQUIREMENTS
✱ Must loop!
✱ 1920 x 1080px
✱ upload your packaged AEP file
✱ must have 4 looping compositions

WEEK 2
You will be given an AI file with some typographic forms, created by students from Intro to Graphic Design, taught by Shrishti Chatterjee.
Download your compositions from here: LINK
For this exercise, we will be using path animations, and masks to create a logo reveal. Think of different ways in which you can reveal the logo provided to you– does it start from the center, does it start from one end of the logo, do two separate paths meet to form the logo?
-> BASIC REQUIREMENTS
✱ Must begin from an empty screen.
✱ 1400 x 1400 px
✱ exported as a .gif file
✱ feel free to add colour!

In today's world where everything is fighting for our attention, so are the companies that surround us. Motion is a tactical tool. It often appears in campaigns and product launches; however, without a system to support it, the impact fades quickly.
In this assignment, you will create your own logo animation, and try to create atleast 3 more motion pieces that replicates the motion system depicted in the logo. These can be anything from social media animations, to motion posters, micro animations for websites, anything! You can choose to animate an already existing logo and make fictional posts for them, or create your own logo! Think about a motion system that you can create with a logo!
-> BASIC REQUIREMENTS
✱ 1 logo animation, .gif that loops!
✱ No size restriction, atleast 1000px
✱ 3 more motion pieces, feel free to use images/video/text/other media to create your motion!

WEEK 3
Music Videos and title sequences are a quintessential part of short-form motion content. The combination of motion graphics and sound is a fun way of visual communication, to incite emotion and feeling.
In this assignment, you will pick a song and create your own short-form musiv video. The key is to understand how to animate to a piece of audio, and create visuals to support it. Animation and Motion design are usually collaborative processes, you are encouraged (not required) to collaborate with your peers! Collaboration often leads to very unique visual outputs!
Until now, we have been working with individual elements, but in this assignment, you would be required to create a world of elements around your video. Think about what motifs you would like to use, would it be more vector based, more texture based or something different? What is the color palette you would be using? Pre-Production is key!
-> BASIC REQUIREMENTS
✱ 10 second video with sound.
(If its a collaborative project, then 10 second per person)
✱ 1920 x 1080 px, minimum!
✱ a Storyboard!
✱ upload the storyboard, project files + export in the correct folder in the drive.

✱ To be uploaded as an .mp4 here in before 1pm on Jan 26th!
✱ File name format- name_musicvideo-ws26
WEEK 4+5
Up until now we have been working on projects that involve only one composition where the animation happens. For your final project, you will need to have at least 5 shots that are put together. The content can be anything, you don’t need to generate content for this, it’s okay if you have already created something in your other classes, and you use that for your final project. It can be a collection of 3 GIFs, a title sequence, a motion kit for a brand, a product animation, an advertisement, anything you want it to be! The only requirement for this project is that your medium of choice is After Effects.
-> BASIC REQUIREMENTS
✱ Minimum 5 SHOTS - the time of this can be anything, but I want you to deal with how to move from one frame to another, essentially creating a transition.
✱ The minimum time frame needs to be 30 seconds, or more or less, we can talk about this!
✱ Title (This doesn’t need to be a slide by itself, it can appear in the beginning or the end of your video, if it's tiny text, that's also ok!)
✱ YOUR NAME (This can appear with the title or in the end by itself!)
✱ Some kind of background music, this can be a song, some additional sound effects, or even a voiceover of something. Audio plays a big role in motion graphics and it’s one additional element you have to think about while creating motion work.

✱ To be uploaded here before 1pm on Feb 4!
✱ File name format- name_f-ws26
This is usually how motion production timelines work, it’s important to know what the steps are, but it’s also completely okay to modify the steps according to what your project requires of you.
Gathering a few references, thinking about what you might want to do. Looking at references and trying to nail down a rough script in your head.
(↗Are.na Channel for your references for style)
✱ Due on 14 Jan, Wednesday
This is a visual representation of what your shots are going to look like. These don’t have to be finished sketches, as long as you can communicate what your ideas are, it should be good enough. You can either do them by hand on the template provided or use the digital version of the template and do it on Photoshop, Illustrator or Procreate, it can be your software of choice.
✱ You will need to submit this storyboard as a part of your final project, but it’s just a part of the process, and doesn't have to look refined at all. Please don’t spend too much time perfecting the sketches in your storyboard, it should take approximately 10% of the time you will spend on your final project.
✱ Submissions uploaded ↗here by 28 Jan, Wednesday! File name format- name_storyboard_ws26
✱ (For future reference- Wonderunit has a great storyboarding software that is often used for motion projects!)
Once you have your storyboard in place, you would know what all you would need to create outside of After Effects for your idea. This is not a mandatory step, it’s just good practice. If you think your project would benefit from being created directly in AE, then go for it!
This includes -
✱ Collecting images and videos, if they are sourced from the internet, please make sure your credit it in your video (it can be very tiny text in the end)
✱ FINALISING the soundtrack you are going to use, in case you’re thinking of animating to a track.
✱ Creating assets on illustrator or photoshop and making sure your files are ready to be imported into AE.
✱ Creating textures/other elements that you want to add to your project.
✱ There is no due date for this, because the same approach won’t work for everyone's project. But IF you are creating assets, you should aim to be done by 1st Feb, Sunday! That should leave you enough time to animate your project.
This is where the fun begins! You will start working with AE, make sure you LABEL YOUR LAYERS and keep your Project Files in the same folder! You will be submitting your AEP to me at the end of the project, so I will 👀 know if you haven’t labelled your layers.
✱ Get Your Shit Together - this is an amazing resource for project management, keeping your AEPs organised will really really help in the long run.
✱ Make sure you have your Auto-Save on! + Keep saving multiple copies of your file.
(AE is really finicky, but there are measures you can take to make sure you have backed up files and your don’t lose your progress- I have lost AE files because it has crashed so I can understand, but also I have warned everyone enough about this, so please please make sure you have file backups! Please avoid preventable loss of data)
✱ If you are not able to preview your animation in real time, try PURGE ALL CACHE when you go to edit>purge
✱ Another good practice if you have complicated animation is to have different AEPs for different shots. Later you can put them all together in a new AEP, but this will help you maintain a smaller file size and ensure a faster workflow.
✱ Again, no due date, but try finishing this by Feb 3, so we can go over finishing touches.
