Operation ID & Bike Registration

Operation ID

Operation ID focuses on protection of personal property. There are two ways in which identification can deter theft of personal property:

  • Identifying labels placed on property where they can be seen by a potential thief, or others.
  • By recording the serial numbers of property so it may be traced in the event that it is stolen. Public Safety Office of

Crime Prevention offers this service free of charge to students, staff and faculty. Bring your Laptop, I-Pod, MP3 Player, Cell Phone, I-Phone or any other item of value bearing a serial number to be recorded. Community wide Operation ID dates are posted on campus and through the Public Safety Newsletter monthly. Students, staff and faculty are welcome to attend any community wide registration date, or use the information provided below to schedule an appointment.

BIKE REGISTRATION

Public Safety encourages students to register their bike/scooter in an effort to deter theft. Students can bring their bicycle/scooter to the Public Safety Office at any time to be registered. The RISD Public Safety Office is located at 30 Waterman Street, Providence, RI. Students are also encouraged to use a heavy lock when securing their bike or scooter. U-Locks are available at the RISD STORE for purchase . Helmets should be worn at all times and traffic laws must be obeyed for personal safety reasons.

Bicycles are prohibited from being secured to fences or handrails, stored in stairwells or hallways. The City of Providence prohibits bicycles being secured to traffic signs, trees and light poles.

Bicycles found to be in violation of the City of Providence regulations are subject to removal by the Providence Dept. of Traffic Engineering. Bicycles found to be in violation of RISD policy will be removed and stored by Public Safety. Prior notification of removal by Public Safety is not required, but will be extended to students whenever possible.
