A STEAM expo is an event that showcases and promotes projects and learning opportunities in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. It's an expanded version of a traditional science fair, incorporating the "A" for "Arts" to emphasize the importance of creativity, design, and critical thinking in these fields.
Students can enter as individuals, small teams, or as a whole class with their teacher. Families are encouraged to get involved but the student should be the driver of the project. Students can enter projects in 5 different categories.
Scientific Investigation: This is a traditional science fair project. For 6th-8th grade students, this will serve as a practice run for the Ventura County Science Fair. All students will present their research investigation on a tri-fold poster.
Reverse Engineering: Involves deconstructing a finished product or system to understand its components, design, and functionality. The goal is to learn how it was made in order to improve the original design, create a compatible product, or discover new manufacturing techniques. Students will present their deconstructed product and explanation on a tri-fold poster.
Things: Involves drafting, rendering, making, building, or forming designs or items utilizing STEAM concepts. This category provides a venue for everything from 3-D printing to architectural design, from woodwork to welding. It can also involve digital design including software that performs tasks and robotics.
Science Fiction: A genre of fiction dealing with imaginary, but more or less plausible content such as futuristic settings, futuristic technology, space travel, aliens, and more. Exploring the consequences of scientific innovations is one purpose of science fiction, making it the true future of STEAM. Science fiction includes an imaginative vision of the possible future of science and technology. Good science fiction tells a good story or raises questions to show the concept of where we have expanded beyond our current understanding. Students choosing this category can also enter their book in the Young Authors Fair in May.
Art: The art category goes beyond traditional fine arts, focusing on how creativity and design principles intersect with science and technology. It can include projects like digital art, data visualization, interactive installations, and 3D-printed sculptures, showcasing the essential role of artistic expression in innovation and problem-solving. This category highlights that the "A" in STEAM represents more than just aesthetics; it's about critical thinking, communication, and human-centered design. Students choosing this category can also enter their work in the Rio Art Show.
Students participating in Scientific Investigation, Reverse Engineering, or Things can select to enter their project as a Competitor or as an Exhibitor.
Competitors will have their project scored by STEAM professionals, district educators/administrators, and/or college students in STEAM majors and will need to be present at the event during a designated time range for their judges interview. Competitors will receive feedback on their projects.
Exhibitors will display their projects for viewing and do not need to be present at the event.
