What is Literacy?

Literacy is much more than just reading and writing!  Basic literacy skills allow a person to engage in society and succeed at every stage of their life.  The ability to use language to read, write, listen, and speak is literacy as defined by ALTA (Academic Language and Therapy Association).  Many scholars believe that literacy is the cornerstone of education!

About me

I grew up in south Louisiana (Cajun Country) and graduated from the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management. After spending 20 years as a Certified Meeting Planner in the hotel industry, I received certifications as a Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP) and SEE Educator (Sequential English Education Literacy Program).   After spending many years as a volunteer with the RGS Parents’ Association and Room Parent, I was excited to join RGS as a Literacy Interventionist.

In 2009, my husband, Todd, and I moved to Santa Fe.  We are the parents to Sarah, a current 4th grade RGS student. In my free time, I enjoy traveling, reading suspense novels and legal thrillers, learning to play golf, cooking Cajun food and spending time with my two pugs, Pickles & Thelma.
