I completed my 40 hours of internships being employed at Berkshire Place. It is a nursing home nestled in Providence, RI on Douglas Ave.
I had to quit my last CNA job at Trinity Health and Rehabilitation Center earlier this year because I moved down to Providence. I still wanted to pursue a career as a CNA so I applied to Berkshire the following month!
This facility consists of 4 floors and is home to up to 220 residents. The 4 floors are made up of 2 Long Term Care units, a Dementia/Alzheimer's unit, and a Behavioral Health unit. I primarily work on the first floor, which is the observed Behavioral Health unit.
My responsibilities consisted of:
Organizing and serving meals
Assisting residents with activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting
Documenting care provided and reporting any changes in resident health or behavior to appropriate staff.
The daily reflection forms I completed during my 40 hours reflected some of the many skills I perform and what I've observed every day.
I've observed a number of skills including post-mortem care, replacing a colostomy bag, and nurses dressing wounds.
My Learned, Performed/Observed, and Questions
2 things I learned:
You need to take care of yourself before caring for others.
Even a nonverbal resident will try their hardest to let you know that they're uncomfortable/in pain.
2 things I performed/observed:
I gave showers to completely dependent residents on their shower days.
I observed the supervising nurse measure wounds and dress them appropriately.
2 things I had questions:
How many deaths are preventable in nursing homes?
Are CNAs allowed to turn on oxygen machines?
Are CNAs allowed to turn on oxygen machines?
The answer is no because that is considered administering a medication. CNAs are allowed to adjust a resident's cannula if need be, but anything else regarding an oxygen tank or concentrator like turning it on or off, adjusting the flow rate, etc is not in a CNA's scope of practice.

Feedback
Since this was my part-time job and not primarily an internship, I did not complete a student internship recommended rubric nor have a supervisor rate me after my internship hours. I did have a fellow CNA who has been a CNA for over 10 years to complete my student intern evaluation to measure how my quality of work has been. Based on the internship goal I set before documenting my hours, I was not surprised that the CNA rated my quality of work and professionalism to be exceeding expectations. Her feedback made it clear that I met my goal of learning and gaining as much experience as I can to become a great CNA.
My overall score on the student intern evaluation form was 27 points out of 27. I absolutely agree with this score because I take pride in doing the best in my work. With that being said, some areas I have excelled in are quality of work and communication.
Would I recommend this nursing facility to future interns? Yes I would. The staff are friendly, it is very hands on, and the environment was clean and safe. My overall experience at Berkshire Place Nursing and Rehabilitation Center was excellent and it is a great facility for CNA students/interns.
