The PE Department offers 2 types of Physical Education Classes
Regular PE and Applied Personal Fitness
Credit 1.0 per year - 3.0 credits needed for Graduation

State Requirements for all PE Students: As of the 2017 school year, all students are required to be tested in areas such as: aerobic capacity, flexibility, and muscular endurance.
Regular Physical Education - In this class students learn and play various sports and games as well as develop their cardiovascular fitness. Activities include but not limited to: flag football, soccer, tennis, Frisbee, basketball, volleyball, floor hockey, softball, kickball, mat ball, volley tennis, pickle ball, badminton.
9th Grade Students - This is an introductory physical education course at Rock Island High School for ninth grade students. Physical Education courses at Rock Island High School are designed to provide students the fundamentals of a variety of sports & activities in order to help support the importance of physical fitness. Physical Education promotes students’ physical, mental, and social wellness and emphasizes the importance of continued physical activity after high school.
10-12 Grade Students - Students will be provided an opportunity to enhance the fundamentals and knowledge of a variety of sports and activities learned during their freshman year, with an emphasis on developing lifetime skills. In addition, curriculum will cover such areas as cardiovascular fitness, exercising safely, weight control and other areas of wellness. They will include individual and team sports, wellness and recreational activities.
Applied Personal Fitness - This class is offered to 9th -12th grade students. In this class, students work on improving their own personal fitness level by using weight lifting techniques and performing cardiovascular fitness. This is for the student-athletes and/or fitness minded students. These students have the option of taking this course rather than the traditional physical education course. Students will be introduced to and assessed on a variety of weight-lifting exercises and techniques. Students will also participate in and assessed on numerous types of speed/agility, jumping, cardiovascular drills and exercises.
Credit 0.5 (one semester course)
This course is usually taken during the student's 10th grade year of school
This course is a graduation requirement.

Health Education at Rock Island High School is a semester long class that is required for graduation. Through Health Education, we believe students receive knowledge and skills that empower them to take charge in their personal wellness. Our goal is to give students the tools to make life-long healthy decisions once they leave RIHS.
This is a course that includes activities, which increase the abilities of students to make decisions affecting their personal, family, and community well-being. The emphasis will include areas of study, but not limited to, the following topics: mental and emotional health, wellness and nutrition, exercise, substance abuse, diseases, human growth and development, sexually transmitted disease, birth control, prevention of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, environmental health and community health.
This course has two components:
Classroom (earns a grade and required for graduation)
Behind the Wheel (earns a grade of pass/fail and no credit)
Credit 0.5 (one semester course)

Note: Priority given to sophomores in good standing at time of registration and based on seat availability. A sophomore in good standing has earned 6 credits
To enroll in Driver Ed for the Fall semester - Must be 16 years of age on or before January 31st
To enroll in Driver Ed for the Spring Semester - Must be 16 years of age on or before August 31st
Driver Education is a one-semester course involving a three-phase program. Students enrolled will be participating in the classroom, on a simulator and street instructional phases at the same time.
The classroom phase is a study of textbook material, state curriculum guides, and other resources pertinent to the safe operation of the automobile. Students must pass this phase in order to graduate.
Street instruction consists of at least three hours of behind the wheel in a specially equipped driver education car.
Simulation instruction requires 12 hours in a simulator.
Students are required to pay the Illinois license fee (currently $20.00). A fee will be charged for the Behind the Wheel instruction (currently $100.00). Course fees are subject to change, due to State legislation.
