The Education Internship Program was created in 2019 to provide Rock Island HS students the opportunity to learn more about careers in education and hands-on experience working with students throughout the district. Through the course, we explore topics such as the qualities of teachers, the role of culture in the classroom, learning environments, the history and philosophies of education, and the role of school in the community. The long term goal of the program is to support the school district's efforts to build a staff that better reflects the diversity of the community.
Interns meet several times a week during Advisory in order to learn key concepts and skills related to education, and to discuss their experiences with other interns.
Interns report to their placement classroom each day in order to gain hands-on experience working with their cooperating teacher to provide instruction to students.

Mr. Mertel teaches World Studies and is the Education internship Coordinator at Rock Island High School. His motivation for creating this course was his own high school experience during which he interned in a high school social studies class. He wants students at Rocky to enjoy the same opportunity that he had. His education includes:
BA from Augustana College in Secondary Education and History
MA from Western Illinois University in Language, Culture, and Education
Currently Working on EdD from University of Illinois in Global Studies in Education
