Rhode Island Federation of Teachers & Health Professionals

2023 – 24 Virtual PD Sessions

Based on the success of the RIFTHP’s Virtual Professional Development sessions, the Rhode Island Federation of Teachers & Health Professionals is pleased to announce its 2023 Virtual PD series.

Because of the great deal of interest this issue has generated, we will kick off the 2023-24 school year with a three-session series on Artificial Intelligence (AI).

This is a topic that many educators are concerned about, interested in or need help with and these sessions will answer lots of questions about what AI in Education could mean for you and your students.

Our second series will continue and expand upon last year’s focus on Trauma Informed Instruction. So many of our students, and teachers themselves, are dealing with the effects of trauma and this series is designed to offer instructional and self-help strategies to mitigate the impact of trauma on success in school.

Sessions will be offered virtually on the dates below for either 90 minutes (6:00

PM – 7:30 PM) or 60 minutes (6:00 PM – 7:00 PM) and can be accessed free of charge at

https://sites.google.com/riilsr.org/riftpddl/virtual-pd-sessions?authuser=0.

As always these RIFTHP PD sessions will focus on Information, Tips and Tools you can use right away.

PLU certificates will be available at the close of each session. We hope you will join us!

RIFTHP Virtual PD Series #2: Trauma Informed Instruction

January 17th, January 24th & January 30th

Our second series will start in January, 2024 and will focus on Trauma Informed Instruction.  So

many of our students, as well as teachers themselves, are dealing with the effects of trauma

and this series is designed to offer instructional and self-help strategies to mitigate the impact

of trauma on success in school.

The three-session Trauma Informed Instruction series will include:

Session 1, Wednesday, January 17th, 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM: Supporting Students through Grief & Loss:

It is common and normal for young people to grieve. A grief sensitive educator can

powerfully support a grieving student and promote mental health. Participants will learn more

about the impact of bereavement on learning, strategies to talk about death and ideas for support.

Session 2, Wednesday, January 24th, 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM: Introduction to Trauma Informed Instruction:

Children face many adverse childhood experiences—violence, abuse, neglect, loss

and more. The result can be psychological trauma, which interrupts healthy

development. Participants will learn more about the science of toxic stress and its relationship to

traumatic effects, as well as strategies to promote resilience and healing.

Session 3, Tuesday, January 30th, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM: Understanding Challenging Behavior through a Trauma Informed Lens:

Investigate the 'why' behind challenging behaviors, learn how

to better understand student behaviors and explore effective trauma informed strategies to support students.

It is a busy time of year, but we know learning never stops.

Please plan to join us in November,

December and January for these informative, strategy filled, FREE sessions!
