It's 2022, exactly fifty years since Title XI emerged creating a new and exciting era for women's sports, and participation in education. "No person shall, on the basis of sex be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." This law gave way to some of the greatest athletes in history, only a few of which are being represented on this stage tonight. Girls in the Boat depicts the story of the 1976 United States Women's Eight, a rowing team that was only able to be established by way of Title XI, and is a story of female empowerment and the overcoming of adversity through a common goal.
Our setting is an Olympic training gym, where the girls in the boat have spent their entire lives preparing for the moment to shine, and make it to the top of their sport. They sweat, bleed, blister, and bleed day in and day out, and will finally get the representation they deserve on the caliber of the world's biggest sporting event.
The girls you will see on stage have worked tirelessly to be able to create this important production, and are so excited to be able to bring this story into your lives. I would like to thank each and every one of them for their hard work and dedication, even through the ab workouts. Additionally, I must thank Adam Nemeth and Nick Bernard for embracing this piece and creating such a wonderful and safe space for our performance. I also must thank Julianna D'Andrea and Nicolas Hendrickson, as well as the rest of our production crew for their dedication to make this production happen. Remember, "it is not the rowing that moves the ship..." Rather, it is the women behind the oars who do so.
Gold Masque would like to thank the families and friends of the cast and crew who have made this production possible through their assistance, patience and support. We extend a very special thank you to Ramapo Principal, Mr. Travis Smith, Assistant Principals, Ms. Mariette Ng and Mr. Dan Giudo and to our Director of Student Activities, Mr. Mike Mancino.
