“I just want help people in my community, it is all part of my job”
Interview with Officer Tayla Giles
By Bushra Ahmed & Sylvie Woods.
Who is Tayla?
Well, Tayla is Wellington Youth Aid Police Officer.
She became a Police officer about 7 years ago
We hear that you are a police officer, what type of police officer are you?
“ In the police there are about 32 different varieties of jobs that you could do in the police. I have been in the police for 7 years now. The job that I do now, well the title of it is called a “ Youth aid officer”.
So what that means is any child under the age of 18, commits an offence if they go to a store and steal something without paying for it. That is what we call shoplifting.
What do you do in your spare time when you're not busy doing your police work?
So my normal day would look like getting up at 4:30 in the morning, then I would go to the gym that I go to which is what we call CrossFit gym. After I finish a full day of work I will make dinner and then probably watch a movie on Netflix and that will be throughout the work week. But on the weekend when I get a bit more time I like to go for walks, find waterfalls out of Wellington, hang out with my friend. I love swimming even though it's a bit cold. It's in the middle of winter.
People in this class think of you as a hero, what do you have to say about that?
I kind of guess that's what we do. If you think about what police officers do,our main job is to make sure everyone is safe. Which is one of the reasons why I wanted to become a police officer, I wanted to help people. Everything we do is to help you. Sometimes it may not seem like we're helping, But we are. Sometimes it means something out of school or giving someone a ticket for speeding, that is helping make sure people are safe.
