Physical Education and Outdoor Ed Coordinator
The elementary Physical Education and Outdoor Ed programs were designed to foster the tools of teamwork, collaboration, leadership and stewardship.
Our PE curriculum includes a balance of cooperative games, competitive sports, and personal health and fitness, with an intention of keeping students active for the majority of class time. Through games and skills, students strengthen self-management and social emotional acceptance. We spend a portion of PE learning and playing outside at the field across from school campus, and head into the gym for the winter months.
Second- Fifth grade students participate in SOAR (Science, Outdoor Adventure and Recreation) class once a week. SOAR classes are designed to further students knowledge of the natural world through hands-on activities, recreational skills, and place-based discovery. Depending on the season students may practice hiking, rock climbing, snowshoeing and XC skiing, as well as participate in local service projects. Class focus is aligned with grade-level science and social studies academic standards.
In addition to PE and SOAR, Pre-K- 12 grade classes have annual field trips. These experiences are organized with classroom teachers and are a component of the our school curriculum. Depending on the grade, students may participate in a local day trip to the Uncompahgre River trail, Top of the Pines, Ridgway State Park, Black Canyon National Park or a local historical site or museum. School sponsored overnight trips begin in Fourth grade.
As a teacher, I will strive to support students in their personal growth and expression. My goal is to challenge each individual to reach their full potential as an engaged, active, lifelong learner.
I treat my students with respect so they know how to treat me. I model safe, responsible choices and will encourage them to do the same. If a problem arises I encourage students to recognize when they may need to take a break and make another choice. Students are a part of the decision-making process, and are expected to make choices based on five principles:
Safety
Responsibility
Respect
Honesty
Kindness
I am at RES Monday through Friday, and will return all phone calls and emails by the end of each day. If further discussion is needed, I would be happy to make an appointment to meet after school.
