9th Grade English will focus on some of the classic, coming of age novels such as The Outsiders, To Kill a Mockingbird, Lord of Flies, etc. 10th Grade English will read The Kite Runner, Night, Things Fall Apart, Animal Farm, and some other works that focus on World Literature. With these books, we will dive into the history, current events, and primary resources that will help students understand the importance of these novels. Students will write a sufficient amount in my class. Journaling, persuasive essays, book reports, formal/academic writing, and speeches will allow students to demonstrate their knowledge to me while learning new communication skills. My goal is for students is to learn how to access reliable sources and become independent thinkers and writers.
I will be teaching 9th and 10th Grade Health classes during advisory this year. Health is one of my favorite classes to teach because it provides students with meaningful learning experiences that will apply to all of their lives. I provide a safe and welcoming classroom so all students feel like they can participate. In the fall of 2016 we adapted a new comprehensive sexual education curriculum that touches on everything to the basic anatomy of the sexual reproduction organs, LGBTQ topics, healthy relationships, sexual orientation and gender identity, healthy life choices, safe sex and birth control options, sexual assault and appropriate interactions and language plus many, many more. You can access these all of these lessons via http://www.advocatesforyouth.org/3rs-curric-lessonplans. During the spring semester we touch on the topic of substance abuse that focuses on decision making and short and long-term consequences of substance abuse.
I am also the Athletic Director for RSS so please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns in that area.
I grew up in Columbia, IL just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis. After high school I attended Southern Illinois University of Carbondale and majored in History. After a couple ski trips to Telluride in college I decided I wanted Colorado to be my new home. After getting my start teaching History in Delta County I took some time to fulfill the urge to ski as much as possible and moved to Telluride to get the ski bumming out of my system. I started teaching at RSS in the fall of 2016. It really is a dream job to work in a wonderful community that supports all of our outdoor education trips. I participate in or organize most trips including Learn to Ski, Learn to Ice Climb, Rites of Passage and the Senior Rafting Trip. Please feel free to contact me at anytime and I'll get back to you in a timely manner.
