Hello families and students! My name is Mrs. McCoy and I am very excited to be back at Ridgeview High School for my sixth year of teaching English! Previously, I taught freshman and sophomore English, but starting this year, I will be teaching junior English, senior English, and AP Lang and Comp.
I graduated from Illinois State University. I student taught for one semester at Bloomington High School and taught several years at Morton High School. I then took a few years off to stay home with my two youngest boys before returning to the classroom in January of 2020.
When I am not in school I enjoy spending time with my four children and my husband. We love to travel and Walt Disney World is one of our favorite destinations. I also love to read: gothic horror, fantasy, and historical fiction are my favorite genres.
Class overview
Senior English: Students will continue to improve their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through texts like Frankenstein, The Scarlet Letter, and The Catcher in the Rye. Real-world, practical communication skills will also be an emphasis in this class.
Junior English: Students will primarily study American literature in chronological order, beginning with Native American literature through contemporary literature. Students will continue to use critical thinking, advanced writing, and literary analysis techniques to explore these texts. Junior year English also strives to prepare students to take the ACT in spring.
AP Language and Composition: In 2025-2026, this will be a combined junior and senior class. This class emphasizes non-fiction texts like Educated and Killers of the Flower Moon and focuses on the craft and structure of writing through rhetorical analysis. Students should expect a challenging class which will prepare them to the AP exam.
Independent Reading Books: All students are expected to have an independent reading book. The criteria for the books varies between classes.
