Expectations for Homework
When completing homework assignments, we all need to be on the same page. This makes students' lives easier; this makes parents' lives easier; this makes teachers' lives easier. Below are some basic expectations for approaching homework in Mr. Owsley's math classes.
All assignments are to be fully completed. This means all problems are completed, all directions are followed, and all work required to obtain a legitimate answer is shown. In this class, the most important part of solving a problem is explaining how you solved it. Assignments with no work shown are not considered complete and will not be accepted for credit. Do I expect perfect answers on your homework? Absolutely not! Do I expect you to aim for perfect answers on your homework? Yes! That can’t happen if you leave problems on the assignment blank.
Your work should follow a logical sequence and should be neatly written. If I can’t read your work, if no final answer or explanation is provided, or if you simply did not follow directions on an assignment, no credit will be given.
Homework is to be turned in on time. While late assignments will be accepted for up to 60% credit, the chapter test is the absolute final deadline for submitting missing assignments. No credit will be given for assignments submitted after the corresponding chapter test has been taken. I will make specialized plans of makeup work for students with extended, excused absences.
Everyone needs practice! This is one of the reasons I assign homework. Work hard, be persistent, be patient, watch the videos I provide, seek out other online homework help, and ask questions when you can (in person or email). Not all learning occurs within 40 minutes of class time. The brain requires more time than that for processing new concepts and procedures. Homework is there to fill in the gaps of misunderstanding.
Lastly, dedicate quality time to homework & study. Dedicate at least 30 minutes of quiet time with no distractions (like TV, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snap Chat, Tik Tok, YouTube videos, texting, etc.) to every assignment. Study halls are perfect opportunities to use quality time to complete assignments. Giving up on assignments or just ignoring work altogether is a rejection of learning, especially given the vast options available online that can provide you with extra help (You Tube!). If you reject learning, then we’re unfortunately wasting each other’s time.
