Mathematics with Mr. Owsley

welcome

Hello math fans!  My name is Mr. Clark Owsley, teacher of Geometry, Algebra 1, Pre-Calculus, and AP Calculus at Ridgeview High School. This is my seventh year in the Mustang math department, but I've been at the teaching game since 2008.  As with each new group, I look forward to the challenging task of bringing mathematics to life.  Let's do this!

Aside from the numbers game, in my free time I enjoy all things physical fitness, playing music, and pondering big ideas.

Important classroom information

Mr. Owsley’s Classroom Procedures

1.     Be respectful at all times to your classmates, classroom guests, and teachers.  This includes – but is not limited to – raising your hand to speak during formal activities, not speaking while someone else is speaking, and refraining from moving aimlessly around the room while critical information is communicated.

2.     Destructive behavior will not be tolerated.  This includes:

o   Damaging property of other students, teachers, or the school.

o   Using degrading comments, physical intimidation, or bullying of any kind to tear down others.

o   Repeatedly sidetracking classwork or discussion with distracting comments/ questions or repeatedly ignoring a

    teacher’s request to stop talking.

o   Being obnoxious, loud, and/or rude.

3.     Show up for class & be productive. When absent, it's tough for you to keep up with what we’re doing in class.  Playing the zombie definitely won’t cut it in this class, either.  You are expected to learn a great deal at a rapid rate in my classes.  Effort and attention are necessary for success in this class.  Pay attention, take good notes, and do not disrupt your classmates’ learning. Be bold!  Attack problems – not people – with intensity!

4.     Be on time.  When the bell rings, our focus shifts to mathematics.  Please, be in your assigned seat when the tardy bell rings.  Sometimes we’ll begin the class with a 10-minute mini quiz, so being on time is super important.

5.     Be prepared to work from bell to bell.  Come to class with your fully-completed math assignment, pencil(s), paper, and any other supplies that are needed for the day’s work.  Have questions prepared before class begins if the homework confuses you.

6. Stay awake!  Students sleeping or making a commitment to sleep distract those around them.  I will give you one verbal warning, and then detentions will surely follow.

7. Use technology properly.  The phones are off limits in my classroom.  I realize this feels like an inconvenience, but that’s just how it is.  Ditch the air pods during instruction time, too.

8. Submit YOUR OWN work.  If someone else’s work appears on your homework, quizzes, or tests, you will get no credit for that assignment/quiz/test, you will be issued a detention, and your parents will be notified.   Regardless of the quality of your own work, please accept responsibility for it.

9. Restroom Use/Locker Retrieval

o   Only one student may leave the classroom at one time.

o   Students must take with them a signed pass.

o   Move to the location quickly and quietly.

o   Make the trip efficient and quick – If it’s clear you’re camping out in the restroom because of boredom or phone addiction, Mr. Burke can intervene to set boundaries.

o   Do not ask to leave class during important instructional time.

Submitting Work

1.  Be sure your name is written on the work you turn in.

2.  Turn in homework as soon as you get it done or by the prescribed due date.

3.  If you are absent, follow the timetable guidelines in the RHS student handbook and be responsible for turning your work in to me.  Old homework is stored in the contain

Homework Help

1. Online resources, such as Khan Academy and YouTube, provide instructional videos to help you understand the math concepts ahead of us.  Watch them to gain insight on the math we’re learning.

2.  I am available at times to help before school – please request help a day in advance so that I can plan for it.

Skyward Procedures

Electronics

1.     Cell Phones & Air Pods & Chromebooks

o   In Mr. Owsley’s classroom, keep all electronic devices out of sight and turned off, unless instructed otherwise. This is policy guided by my boss, and endorsed by me.

o   Cell phones are not to be visible in my classroom.

o   Put the air pods in those tiny little cases while we’re in full-class instruction mode.

o   If/when we begin using Chromebooks in this class, then they are to be used for mathematics, not entertainment.

2.     Calculator Use

o   1st Semester -- You will not have access to a calculator first semester on tests or quizzes – nor should you be using them to complete homework assignment.

o   2nd Semester – Please be sure that you have a calculator handy for quizzes and tests – also, not a calculator found on your Chromebook or phone.
