Improvisation is a fun, one-semester course for 9-12 graders. Students practice skills relevant to obtaining a job and being a success in the 21st century. These skills include creativity, collaboration, communication, critical thinking, flexibility, and resilience. The art of improvisation provides students with understanding of the importance of body language, status, spontaneity and projection, while they enjoy performing on a daily basis with their peers.

Eleanor A.

Costume & Makeup Design is a one-semester course for 9-12th graders. Students learn the fundamentals to conceptualize and create theatrical costumes and makeup designs. Students practice beauty, character, period styles, fantasy, and wound makeups. Projects include design and execution of makeup for selected time periods or performances. In today’s world of commercials, video, runway, television, film, and stage, every show employs costumers and makeup artists. This course provides an insight into “real-world” opportunities for students who love to create innovative ideas or to capture convincing historic details.

Acting One is an entry level, one-semester course for 9-12th graders. Students perform short scenes and monologues, write original scripts, learn basic theatrical terms, and discover fundamentals of what it takes to be a working actor. Students practice the art of collaboration, creativity, curiosity, critical inquiry, communication, and craft. Students improve their public speaking skills and confidence in a safe, encouraging environment.

Acting Two This course provides students with an understanding of theatrical performance styles throughout history. Students rehearse and perform scenes from a variety of time periods. In addition, they learn staging and acting techniques that build upon the skills they learned in Acting One and Improvisation. Students learn to convey meaning through critical choices while they analyze and critique their growth in a constructive, nurturing environment.

Advanced Acting may be taken by students who have taken Acting Two. This course offers students who love theatre an opportunity to expand their knowledge of theatrical techniques, designs and staging. Students may work on directing portfolios, technical portfolios, acting auditions, script writing, and performance or technical skills relevant to their interests. This course prepares students with the necessary skills needed to enter any competitive university acting program.
