How do I practice effectively?

Daily home practice is essential to success on a string instrument. No one is successful on a string instrument (or any skill!) without consistent practice. At the beginning of the year, students should be practicing 20 minutes a day, 4-5 days a week. Establishing a routine with your child is very important in establishing successful practice habits. Help your child establish a time and place where they can practice without distraction.

Daily practice is much more effective than lengthy, one-time practice sessions.

Eight steps to successful beginner practice sessions

1) Practice taking instrument out of case/putting it away

-Practicing instrument care is the first and most important step in learning your instrument.

2) Practice how to properly hold the instrument

-Practice rest position and play position. Get comfortable with both positions.

3) Practice which finger goes on the correct tape. Take time with this step. It is important to understand where each finger is placed on the instrument. Don't rush!

4) Sing every exercise before playing on your instrument. By singing first, your brain understands the melody and it makes it easier to play after. Don't be afraid to sing!

5) Do not try to use the bow until the teacher has instructed to do so. This is CRUCIAL! You could damage the bow if you don't know how to take it out and care for it. Be patient- when the time comes, you will be ready to use the bow but before then, please keep it safely in the case.

6) Practice in a quiet place in your home. Find a place to store your instrument where it will be safe from visitors and drastic temperatures.

  • Don't store instrument in a car, next to a heater/AC. Keep in a place that has room temperature.

7) Keep a practice journal. Write a goal and a reflection after each practice session. It will not only help you keep track of your tasks but it will help you remember what you need to work on for next time.

8) HAVE FUN! This is the best and most exciting part of learning something new!
