The Institute of Research, Engagement, and Design (iRED) is a whole-school magnet at Westwood High School. The school curriculum emphasizes the STEAM subjects of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. Students are given opportunities to do research in all subject areas. We want students to ask questions and engage their curiosity to seek out and evaluate information. And across the curriculum, students are taught a design-thinking process that guides their inquiry and places them at the center of their learning.
iRED students are not restricted to a specific set of courses. Instead, we encourage them to explore career opportunities through varied coursework in areas of interest. Our design-based learning focuses on providing students with school work that advances learning through real-world work. We value the process, which further emphasizes the skills of collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity.
All students at Westwood are in the iRED magnet program. Students who live in our attendance zone and choose to attend Westwood are automatically enrolled. Students who live in other Richland Two School District attendance areas may apply to the iRED magnet through the annual magnet and choice application process, usually in December-January and again in May of each year. Students who apply are selected through a lottery system, and all students have an equal chance of acceptance.
The iRED magnet is open to all students, and we value students who represent a diversity of experiences, viewpoints, abilities and interests. We believe that a diverse staff and student body bring different perspectives and talents to our collaborations and contribute significantly to our understanding and appreciation of our world.
“I like that the iRED program has given students the opportunity to feel like the school has something for everyone, no matter their background.”
