Career and Technology Education
This year all of the teachers at Spring Valley High School will be communicating course information to parents and students via their websites. You may find information for my courses at (insert complete website address here). On my site is a Google Calendar for the course your student is in. In the bottom right-hand corner is a button that will enable you to subscribe to the calendar (it says “+ Google Calendar”). If you subscribe to all of the calendars for all of the classes your student is taking this year you will be able to view all of his/her major assignments in one convenient location. You can access the calendars from a computer or from your smartphone. You will need a Google account to do this. If you don’t already have one please consider creating one. It is free. Visit https://accounts.google.com and get started today.

I think rewarding students motivates them to do well. My students will be given a small gift for doing a great job. Homework assignments will be given on a weekly basis. I will not give any homework assignments over the weekend. I will provide a handout with instructions or it will be listed on the white board. The students are responsible for writing the homework assignments down and I will sign off on them. The grading and make-up policies are listed in our course syllabus. The school will provide the textbook that will be used in class.
Please notify me if your child has any specials needs and/or medical problems that I need to be aware of. The information that you share with me will be kept confidential.
I will inform you of all major assignments through email or I can provide a hard copy for you. You will be notified of any upcoming important dates or event. You can explore our website to get a copy of the school’s calendar.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. My conference hour is during 6th period from 1:10 p.m. - 1:45 p.m. and I frequently check my email at sawells@richland2.org. I also can be reached at 803-699-3500, ext. 69213.

Point Recovery Procedure for Major Assessments
If a student wishes to recover points lost on a major assessment, he/she may submit supplemental work to demonstrate mastery of the skills and achievement of the standards. This supplemental work must be approved by the teacher prior to the student attempting it.
Students must request supplemental work within two days of receiving their grade on the major assessment, and the supplemental work must be completed and submitted to the teacher within three days of being assigned. The teacher may allow more time if the situation warrants.
The teacher will approve appropriate supplemental work, the form of which will vary from teacher to teacher and from assessment to assessment, depending on the course, the unit, and the skills and standards assessed.
Examples of possible supplemental work include, but are not limited to, (1) test corrections, where students explain what they did wrong, perform appropriate corrections, and explain how to accomplish or solve similar tasks or problems, (2) a written essay or presentation, where students explain the relevant concepts and skills and demonstrate their knowledge and understanding, or (3) a complete resubmittal of a new assessment, where students accomplish or solve new tasks or problems.
The teacher will award appropriate points based on the quality of the student’s supplemental work as measured against the expectation that the student should demonstrate mastery of the skills and achievement of the standards.
