Why AVID?

It is estimated that by the year 2020, two-thirds of all jobs will require some level of post-secondary education. AVID prepares students for 21st century careers each day by providing the academic and behavioral skills necessary to succeed in the workplace. Organization, time management, critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving are strong components of the AVID System. AVID includes career exploration in its secondary curriculum, develops partnerships with organizations to help students find pathways to careers, and supports and prepares students in degree and certificate programs to be successful in the workforce.

What AVID Is:

• an acronym that stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination

• an in-school academic support program

• for all students, but it targets those in the academic middle

Who is an AVID Student?

AVID students are students in the academic middle, capable of completing a college preparatory path with support. These students often are not realizing their full potential academically. In the identification process a number of criteria are considered, including:

• Average to high state test scores

• Grades (2.0 GPA or higher)

• Demonstrate appropriate classroom behavior and citizenship

• Maintain good attendance

• Have the desire and motivation to prepare for entrance to a four-year college

• May be the first in the family to attend college

• Historically under-served/underrepresented in 4-year colleges

• Have college potential with support

• May have special circumstances

Once Selected for AVID, What are the Student Requirements?

AVID students must:

• attend an AVID elective class

• maintain a 2.0 GPA in all classes, along with satisfactory citizenship and attendance

• maintain the AVID binder with assignment/grade record sheets and daily notes in all

classes

• complete all homework assignments and commit to studying every night

• a remedial program

• a "free ride"

• a homework / study hall program
